COMMON NAMES:
Douglas Fir, British Columbia Pine, Columbia Pine, Oregon Pine, Douglas Spruce, Yellow Spruce, Red Spruce, and Douglas Tree.
PROPERTIES:
The wood dries rapidly with little warping. Douglas fir is a resinous wood, and the resin canals can leak and bleed, marking the wood with tiny lines most visible on longitudinal surfaces. The wood has high bending strength, high stiffness and high crushing strength.
USAGE:
Douglas fir is an important commercial timber in the United States and Canada, ranking as one of the world's most important sources of plywood. Some decorative veneers are made from Douglas fir and are used in rustic paneling. It is also used for heavy construction.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Douglas fir physical characteristics made it extremely popular with carpenters and architects because the wood does not warp. Kiln-dried fir makes a beautifully figured, easily finished interior woodwork, both in vertical and flat grain.
