Knotty Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Western White Pine; Silver, Soft, Finger Cone, Mountain, Idaho, and Little Sugar Pine.
PROPERTIES:
Pines thrive in the deep porous soil of north-facing mountain slopes where the snow gets deep and the growing season stays short. Despite the rigors of climate, specimens reach 175' in height with diameters of 8' at breast height. The silvery-gray trunks of mature forest trees usually have no branches for half or more of their height. Most pines have a short-branched, narrow, yet symmetrical crown. Slender, slightly curved cones can grow to lengths of about 12 inches.
USAGE:
Commercially, western white pine commands one of the highest prices of all softwoods. It's in continued demand for window and door frames, molding, and high-quality veneer for plywood. Besides millwork, you can use western white pine for indoor furniture, cabinets, and shelving units, as well as light construction.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Many of the properties that make Pine a first choice for paneling also put it at the top of the list for furniture and architectural woodwork due to the wood's uniform cell structure, scarcity of resin pockets, and resistance to splitting. Finished parts fit together snugly without binding.

Every wood specie will also display certain specific characteristics in with age or mineral streaks. While these marks and variations provide the character and beauty of each species, they could occur sporadically throughout your cabinetry.
